H

Early and Medieval History

Archaeological evidence indicates that human settlement in the Bengaluru region dates back thousands of years. The earliest known mention of the name Bengaluru comes from an old Kannada stone inscription from 890 CE found at the Nageshwara Temple in Begur.

The region came under the influence of several dynasties and kingdoms, including the Western Ganga dynasty, the Chola Empire, the Hoysala kingdom and later the Vijayanagara Empire.

F

Foundation of Modern Bengaluru

In 1537, Kempe Gowda I, a ruler under the Vijayanagara Empire, established a mud fort that is considered the foundation of modern Bengaluru. The older trading areas known as petes are still remembered as part of the city’s historic urban structure.

After the Vijayanagara period, Bengaluru passed through different political phases, including control by the Adil Shahi forces, the Mughals, the Wodeyars of Mysore, Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan.

B

British and Cantonment Era

During the Anglo-Mysore Wars, the city came under the influence of the British East India Company. In 1809, the British established a military cantonment outside the old city, which created a new urban zone and influenced the city’s future growth.

Over time, Bengaluru developed as both an administrative and military centre under the Mysore kingdom and British presence, eventually growing into a major modern city.

M

Modern Growth

In the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, Bengaluru expanded rapidly through industry, education, public sector institutions, aerospace, defence, technology parks and private-sector growth.
